Free peoples in free societies discriminate. We all have our likes and dislikes. As such, there will always be discrimination. Discrimination is rampant in part because people are ignorant of the damage they can cause when they discriminate. Similarly, they may fear you and are trying to take you down a notch or two. They may also be afraid of their own shortcomings and by discriminating “bullying” they are trying not to show their own weaknesses.
It is also rampant in part because of oversensitivity on the part of many who feel they are being discriminated against. Too many people who are being discriminated against are not standing up for themselves and adopting the thinking that they are victims. When this happens, they are in effect accepting the premise that they are inferior and validating the assertions of the one who discriminates.
Furthermore, when the discriminatory behavior is validated by accepting victimhood status, it only serves to reinforce the discriminatory actions and behavior. In accepting victimhood status; the perpetrator is made to feel vindicated or right and are thus free to continue their discriminatory behavior. In short, in many cases (not all) the one who accepts victimhood as an escape mechanism is in effect enabling the discriminators behavior.
While discrimination will never be completely eliminated, the key to ending destructive discriminatory behavior is to stop accepting victimhood status as a means of escape from it. Part of becoming equal is to not accept the premise that you are not. We all have our strengths and weaknesses. By discovering and strengthening individual strengths, everyone has the ability to overcome almost any obstacle thrown their way. However, do not ignore your own weaknesses. They too must be discovered and strengthened.
In short:
-Never accept that you are inferior.
-Never accept that you are a victim.
-Work to develop your strengths and weaknesses.
-Be more thick skinned and remember that those who discriminate against you are doing so because they are either ignorant, afraid of you, afraid of their own shortcomings or all of the above!
Keith t.
